Deflections off equipment or the body (including skates), that are unintentional are permitted. On the ice during standard play, each side has six players on skates, one of whom serves as the goaltender. History

Inline hockey puck variant is played by two teams — consisting of four skaters and one goalie, on a dry rink divided into two halves by a center line, with one net at each end of the rink. The Svenska damhockeyligan (SDHL) (known as the Swedish Women’s Hockey League in sports predictions and betting English), announced in 2022 that it would include body checking during its 2022–23 season, but would maintain a prohibition on open-ice hits. Prior to this point (body checking had been a part of the women’s game in most cases), including in Europe. Major penalties assessed for fighting are typically offsetting, meaning neither team is short-handed and the players exit the penalty box upon a stoppage of play following the expiration of their respective penalties. A single minor penalty may be extended by two minutes for causing visible injury to the victimized player. Up until the 1999–2000 season, regular-season NHL games were settled with a single five-minute sudden death period with five players , plus a goalie, per side, with both teams awarded one point in the standings in the event of a tie. In a formal game, each team has six skaters on the ice at a time, barring any penalties, including a goaltender.

Goaltenders

The earliest available records of women’s ice hockey were in the late 19th-century in Canada. A deke (short for “decoy”), is a feint with the body or stick to fool a defender or the goalie. Often the term checking is used to refer to body checking — with its true definition generally only propagated among fans of the game.
