Writer: Madeline Rosene

When we touched down in Tepic, Mexico, the plane rolled through a ceremonial water salute, a fire truck spraying arcs of water that glittered in the sun, as our Volaris flight taxied in. This aviation tradition, used around the world to celebrate inaugural routes, retirements, and historic milestones, felt like a christening into something new.

On the tarmac, a crowd had gathered, clapping and waving as if greeting old friends. It wasn’t just our arrival, it was history: the very first nonstop flight from Los Angeles to Tepic from VolarisDuring the flight, attendants handed out raffle‑ticket stress balls shaped like miniature airplanes. Someone in our row won a free round trip on the same route. We didn’t, but we’d already won something better: a gateway into a part of Mexico that still feels like discovery.

This is the part in the film where everyone shouts, “Road trip!” and the screen cuts to a convertible flying down an open road, long hair whipping in the wind, the promise of something unforgettable just ahead. Only this wasn’t a movie. This was us, ready to trade jet fuel for asphalt, taking the scenic route through Nayarit.

Consider this less a straight shot to the coast and more a zigzag through culture, cuisine, and coastline. It’s not for the “logistically logical.” It’s for travelers who prefer murals and mezcal over shortcuts, who’d rather collect roadside coconuts than save fifteen minutes on Google Maps. From the historic port town of San Blas, where mangroves braid themselves into living tunnels, to a boutique hacienda in Jala at the foot of a volcano, through the surf‑bright streets of Sayulita, and finally to the polished calm of Punta de Mita, this drive isn’t just about reaching the destination. It’s about savoring the journey. If the whole “maybe the vacation was the journey we took to get there” philosophy isn’t your thing, feel free to skip ahead to our review of the Conrad Punta de Mita.

📍San Blas, Nayarit, Mexico

We made our way to the Matanchén Pier, a broad walkway that extends over the Pacific and ends with a bronze statue of Rebeca Méndez Jiménez, known locally as “La Loca del Muelle de San Blas.” She spent decades waiting in her bridal dress on this very pier for her fiancé who never returned. She is immortalized in “En el muelle de San Blas” a 90s song by Maná about this woman, that has amassed hundreds of millions of listens thanks to its catchy and memorable guitar riff. Maybe this song doesn’t contain the perfect subject matter for a road trip anthem, but the latin guitar is relaxing and lead singer, Fher Olvera’s voice is soothing. The statue on the pier stands as both a memorial and magnet, inviting visitors to pause and remember.

On the La Tovara boat tour, we drifted and dashed through tranquil channels shaded by towering mangroves. The power boats weaved through the waterways like a highspeed chase scene. We spotted storks and their eggs balanced on branches, their nests hidden high above the reach of crocodiles, which we spotted, below. Iguanas sunned themselves on driftwood, and the air pulsed with birdsong.

San Blas offered us myth, music, nature– everything the road trip promised on just our first stop.

📍Jala, Nayarit, Mexico

Drive time from San Blas: ~1.5 hours

After San Blas, we steered inland toward Jala, a Pueblo Mágico framed by the looming Ceboruco volcano. Unlike the coast, Jala feels quieter, slower, its cobblestone streets leading to a sandstone basilica whose bell towers guard the valley below.

Our home for the night was the Nukari Quinta Boutique Hotel, a restored 18th‑century hacienda distinguished by its deep red walls and elegant white columns. It manages to feel both timeless and contemporary. With only 17 rooms, it feels like a secret. Each room is spacious, elegantly furnished, and some feature their own indoor soaking tub (Jacuzzi or Roman tub). These tubs are detox stations for weary travelers: steam off the road and linger. Note that Nukari Quinta Boutique is also home to Nadira Spa, the only full-service hotel spa in Jala.

As the sun began its descent, we climbed to Nukari’s rooftop terrace. The timing was perfect: golden hour, or rather purple hour, as the sun slipped directly behind the basilica, its glow framed by the bell towers like a living painting. Dinner unfolded course by course, paired with glasses from Meseta del Cielo, Nayarit’s first vineyard. Just 45 minutes from Jala, the vineyard thrives in a rare highland microclimate where volcanic soil and cool breezes coax European grape varieties into flourishing.

We began with the Macabeo 2022, a white wine soft and round, with green apple, peach, and hints of jasmine, which paired beautifully with a goat cheese salad topped with passion fruit. Then came the Rosado 2024, bright and elegant, the color of twilight itself, echoing the purple glow behind the basilica. The evening’s centerpiece was a perfectly seared ribeye with rosemary and roasted vegetables, earthy and tender. Meseta del Cielo’s Syrah has drawn national attention, with a spot in Cava Magazine’s Top 99 Mexican Wines, a sign that this young vineyard, planted in volcanic soil at 1,900 meters above sea level, is quickly putting Nayarit on Mexico’s wine map.

The next morning, after breakfast, we set out for Cascada El Salto. The trail began with a charming, rickety rainbow bridge, the kind that makes you wonder halfway across whether you should have updated your will. On the other side, cows and bulls grazed lazily in the grass, each with bright ear tags like earrings, proof they weren’t wild but likely belonged to nearby ranchers who let them roam the volcanic foothills.

By the time we reached the waterfall, thirty meters of white water thundered down, the mist cooling our faces. And there it was: the reason we wanted to make this road trip the kind that zigzags instead of beelines. For places like this: hidden, untamed, and entirely their own.

📍Sayulita, Nayarit, Mexico

Drive time from Jala: ~1 hour and 30 minutes

Arriving in Sayulita after staying in Jala feels like a dream in technicolor (who turned up the saturation?). Surfboards lean against rainbow-colored walls. The scent of ocean salt mixes with street‑food spices, and the rhythm here beats in flip‑flop pace. Even time plays by different rules—literally. Once you leave the northwestern parts of Nayarit (like Tepic or Jala, which are on Mountain Standard Time, UTC−7) and enter the Bahía de Banderas region, home to Sayulita and Punta de Mita, the clock jumps ahead one hour into Central Standard Time (UTC−6).

Our base here was the Sayulinda Hotel, a design-forward boutique stay just steps from the beach. This chic hotel is booming and blooming. Sayulinda doesn’t just do plants; they do botany big: bold, global, and entirely unbothered by borders. Here, Madagascar leans into Brazil, China hangs beside Chiapas, and somehow each species of fern, palm, and philodendron all thrive in Sayulita’s salt-tinged, humid air. The terracotta walls amplify every shade of green, and the light that filters through black woven lanterns feels almost botanical itself. A wooden swing draped in pom-poms hangs beneath the ceiling garden, waiting for someone to sit and gently sway while they wait to check in. Here, the plants aren’t local, but they’re right at home, and somehow, so are you.

Despite its boutique scale, Sayulinda packs character into its 51 rooms, each designed to echo the surf-town outside. The crown jewel is the Suite del Patrón, the hotel’s only suite. Its sweeping ocean views and elevated finishes are perfect for those who want a bit of VIP luxury experience. Then there are the Ocean View Rooms, perched higher up for those postcard-worthy sunsets; the Terrace Rooms, which are pet-friendly, and the Standard Rooms, which may be the simplest, but still carry Sayulinda’s signature bright, simple, modern style.

The true showstopper of this hotel: its rooftop infinity pool, an oasis where water meets sky and magic happens. Beside it, Bar del Patrón pours specialty cocktails, nominated among Mexico’s Top 10 Hotel Bars at the 2025 Shaker Awards.

If not at the pool, spend the afternoon wandering the alleys of Sayulita or ducking into an artisan boutique or gallery. Sayulinda isn’t flashy or full of frills, but it’s vivid and modern—and the private balconies come with hammocks made for mid-afternoon swings, the kind that turn into naps before dinner.

📍Punta de Mita, Nayarit, Mexico

Drive time from Sayulita: ~25 – 30 minutes

At the edge of Riviera Nayarit, where the coastline bends into a near-perfect crescent, Punta de Mita extends into the Pacific with the quiet poise of a place that knows exactly what it is. This is our final stop. Once a modest fishing village, Punta de Mita has evolved into one of Mexico’s most exclusive coastal enclaves. It is home to a constellation of resorts including the fabulous (and dog friendly)  W Punta de Mita. To the east of Punta de Mita, there’s the Delta Hotels Riviera Nayarit, an All-Inclusive Resort. And if you’re planning on venturing farther down the coast towards Puerto Vallarta, UNICO 20 105 Hotel Vallarta is a must-stay.

We stayed at the Conrad Punta de Mita, which offers not just beauty, but a kind of spiritual experience, a resort that feels both expansive and deeply grounding.

Conrad Punta de Mita. Litibu, Nayarit. Mexico. Photo by: Victor Elias Photography.

Can you really “walk into” or “enter” the Conrad Punta de Mita? No, those descriptions are too basic. At the Conrad Punta de Mita everything a guest does should be 200% more grandiose and be described as such. You strut into the lobby, you fall from the folds of heaven into the lobby, you float on the wings of destiny into this lobby! This is your White Lotus moment. This is 9 Perfect Strangers without Nicole Kidman and the drugs. And if you’re not a wealthy troubled guest, you can at least pretend to be and people will take care of you. You’ll be looked after from the time the staff hands you a cool moistened towel while you wait to check in to the time in the infinity pool when you really really want a coconut because everyone else got one and you don’t want to miss out!

“We’re all out,” the poolside waiter said regretfully. But after seeing our sad puppy dog eyes and returning five minutes later, he said, “Actually I found one more!”

“How do you say, ‘You are my hero!’ in Spanish?” we asked a friend, hoping to thank the waiter.
“Mi héroe!” he said. “But if you want to get more coconuts for all of us plus some extra shots of rum, you could try, ‘Tu es mi héroe, Papi!’” he said seductively.

Bar hopping is out and pool hopping is in. The resort’s three pools (yes, three) provide a setting for every mood: the elegant main infinity pool, a quieter adults-only option, and a kid-friendly pool near the family zone with an epic waterslide. Naturally, we spent most of our time orbiting the swim-up bar, where the standout cocktail was the Sake Spritz: a sparkling elixir of Sake Namai Junmai (30ml), Il Follo Brut Rosé (90ml), ginger ale, and toronja (grapefruit). Bright, balanced, and blissfully not too sweet.

The guest rooms vary subtly depending on their location. Rooms in the main complex offer convenient access to the lobby, spa, and restaurants. But if you want to fall asleep to the lull of the Pacific, the oceanfront suites, located in low-rise buildings closer to the beach, offer balconies, hammocks, and private plunge pools that make it hard to ever leave. Either way, all rooms have an earthy elegance—neutral tones, natural textures, and a modern warmth that feels neither over-designed nor underwhelming.

Codex Restaurant

To get to Codex, the signature fine dining restaurant at Conrad Punta de Mita, you don’t just walk, you wind. Past palm groves and torch-lit paths. We hope you’re ready for this.

Inside, bamboo ceilings hover above an open kitchen, where flames flicker behind chef silhouettes. White wood-beaded chandeliers sway gently. Tiki torches crackle just outside. Strung bulbs glow like floating orbs in the trees. Even the bread—served warm with mole butter and rosemary-guajillo chile oil—feels ceremonial.

But if you’re lucky, your night doesn’t end inside.

There’s one table (just one) set beneath the mangroves directly on the sand. A round wooden table, two woven chairs, ocean in front, trees above. It’s not beachfront dining in the cliché sense. It’s beachfront dining in the spiritual sense. Like the sea pulled up a chair just to watch you eat.

As the sun sets through the branches, turning everything lavender and gold, dishes arrive that are as poetic as the setting.

“Be careful,” the waiter warned gently, placing the habanero sauce on the table. “We don’t want to see you crying later.” He smiled. So did we. Because even if we did cry, it’d either be from gratitude or the spice of life that the Conrad Punta de Mita so beautifully layers into the experience through bold flavors, unexpected details, and those little moments that remind you why we travel in the first place.

We came for the inaugural Volaris flight, but what we found was a winding corridor of culture, coastline, and calm. Nayarit gave us music rising from the docks, wine at volcanic altitudes, and sunsets caught between bell towers and palm fronds. From Jala’s highland elegance to Sayulita’s saturated pulse, and finally Punta de Mita’s sun-drenched glamour, each stop offered a different kind of brilliance, woven together, not by speed, but by spirit. The route was anything but direct, just the way we like it. If you’re after the quickest path, this guide isn’t for you. But if you prefer waterfalls to Wi-Fi,  believe that the best vacations don’t start at the destination, they start the moment you choose the long way? We’ll see you on the road.

The menu features fresh seafood and traditional American dishes with a coastal influence, along with a selection of beer, wine, and cocktails. CAST & PLOW

Cast & Plow is a fine dining restaurant located within the Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey. Play “Pick Your Favorite Yacht,” (the game we created based on the view from the restaurant.) The menu features contemporary and seasonal farm-to-table cuisine inspired by the local Southern California coastal harvest, with a focus on sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. Cast & Plow offers a sophisticated and refined dining experience in a relaxed and elegant atmosphere. Excellent vegetarian options and an excellent burger.

With a relaxed atmosphere, stunning water views, and a commitment to using only the highest quality ingredients, Brizo is a popular dining destination for locals and travelers alike.

SUGAR FISH

Oh, the sweet, buttery taste of fresh fish, cleansed with a swig of sake. Hungry? Order the “Nozawa Trust Me,” the largest Omakase option, with some more “prime” selections of fish. Not so hungry? Opt for the “Trust Me Lite.” It’s sort of a baby fish, mama fish, papa fish situation– with the middle option being the regular “Trust Me.” Whatever you do, just make sure you order the albacore belly and toro. None of the “Trust Me” options will disappoint; trust us.

KAZUNORI

If there’s a line, don’t worry. It moves pretty quickly and it’s 100% worth it. Owned by Sugarfish’s famous Sushi Nozawa Group, you can get the same quality of fish at Kazunori that you do at Sugarfish, but there’s just one catch (ha, just fishing for puns here): Kazunori is strictly a hand roll bar. It’s the first restaurant of its kind. Its minimal menu consists of a variety of just-made hand rolls made with crispy nori, warm rice, and delectable fish (or veggie options).

RUTH’S CHRIS STEAK HOUSE

Capital Grille, Maestro’s, and Ruth’s Chris– we all know the classic big three steakhouses. While they all have their strengths (the award for lobster mac goes to Capital Grille), Ruth’s Chris takes the prize for best steak by a landslide. Maybe it’s the sizzling 500° plate that it’s served on or the butter and fresh parsley finish, but no one can beat a Ruth’s Chris steak. Editor’s suggestion: Take yourself on a date, sit your fine self down at the bar, and order the most expensive glass of wine on the menu. There’s a good chance you’ll make friends.

DEAR JANE’S

Dear Jane’s: the perfect spot to indulge in culinary love letters, where every dish reads like a page-turner and every course leaves you craving the next chapter. The restaurant enthralls diners with its ever-evolving menu, artfully crafted from locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients that celebrate the rich culinary tapestry of modern American cuisine. Embark on a gastronomic getaway at Dear Jane’s, where each bite feels like a postcard from the palate, whispering sweet nothings to your senses and urging you to savor the moment.

Just steps outside of the hotel’s spacious rooms is a delightful courtyard where you can easily access the water to swim or kayak. Paddle Surf LA, the Outrigger Canoe Club, and YogAqua (yoga on a paddle board, anyone?) are all walking distance.

Jamaica Bay Inn and the beach are quite close to a revitalized marshland area and protected wildlife refuge known as the Oxford Basin. The area was first part of the Ballona Wetlands (now located just a few miles south). In 1963 the Oxford Basin, also now known as the Marina Sanctuary, was named the Marina del Rey County Bird Conservation Area. Since the area’s major restoration in 2016, wildlife, particularly birds, have flocked to the area. These stunning displays of wildlife also often make their way to Mother’s Beach and the hotel. For all of you bird watchers and ornithologists, according to ebird.org, over 50 species of birds were observed in the area in 2022 alone. Marina del Rey Jamaica Bay InnConsidering there are an estimated 10,824 bird species on earth, .46% of the all species is nothing to sneeze at. We’re getting “orny” just thinking about it (hopefully that ornithology joke didn’t fly over your head).

Hotel Restaurant Dining

As we made our way to enjoy breakfast at Jamaica Bay Inn’s Beachside Restaurant & Bar, we spotted what we amateur bird watchers believe was an Allen’s Hummingbird in the courtyard. The coppery orange and green bird danced around the bird of paradise tropical plant, sticking its long, thin beak deep into the flower to find the nectar within. Some say that the way the hummingbird can reach beyond the tough, unappetizing parts of a flower to reach the sweetness inside reminds us to always seek out what’s good in life. Marina del Rey Beachside Restaurant and Bar Jamaica Bay InnTo others, hummingbirds signify overcoming challenging times, healing, hope and good luck. Some believe they have a spiritual significance and mean that a lost loved one is near. We love that the hotel’s logo even incorporates a hummingbird as the “J” and “B” of Jamaica Bay Inn.

Jamaica Bay Inn’s Beachside Restaurant & Bar is just steps away from the sand and overlooks Mother’s Beach.

The restaurant serves fresh California cuisine from Executive Chef Irene Verceles. Marina del Rey Beachside Restaurant and Bar Jamaica Bay InnThe quality of this elevated waterfront dining experience seems more inline with a four or five star hotel and goes above and beyond what one might expect from this Hilton 3 star Tapestry Collection property, which is just one of the reasons why we recommend this cost-efficient hotel. The weekend brunch menu is alive with the rich flavors of cornbread and blueberry pancakes with vanilla bean maple syrup and cinnamon honey butter and the red wine poached pear with smoked blue cheese, toasted pecans, and bitter greens.

For cocktail hour, Beachside Restaurant offers many delicious small plates and starters. Try the ahi tuna tartare with ginger ponzu and avocado, the roasted carrots with pomegranate molasses and kale pesto, or the brown buttered corn with cotija cheese and chimichurri.

The restaurant is open daily:
Brunch 7am-3pm, Dinner 4pm-10pm

Rooms & Suites

Whether or not you book a suite, you can rest assured that your room at Jamaica Bay Inn will be spacious. Of course, we recommend the waterfront marina-view rooms. Many of these rooms include balconies that look out into the hotel’s courtyard paradise and beach. Marina del Rey Jamaica Bay Inn If having space is a higher priority than having chic, modern-styled rooms, then the rooms at Jamaica Bay will not disappoint. The Marina View Suite features a master bedroom with one king bed and a separate living room with a sofa sleeper. The two full bathrooms include a master bath with two sinks, a separate soaking tub, and a tile shower. Both the master bedroom and living room offer gorgeous marina views, and guests can also enjoy a balcony off the living room.

The Area: Marina del Rey

With waterfront views, year-round outdoor dining, and award-winning restaurants, Marina del Rey is set to become the next Los Angeles culinary hotspot. Rejuvenate and reconnect with the outdoors in this seaside community. Parasail, Cycle the coast, paddle board to breakfast, or hop on board a dinner cruise and voyage into the sunset! Venice Beach Boutique Hotel Bliss: Hotel Erwin https://www.lefairmag.com/hotel-erwin-boutique-hotel-venice-beach/ Sun, 04 Dec 2022 17:29:33 +0000 https://lefairmag.com/?p=10909 Hotel Erwin Venice Beach

In the elevator of Hotel Erwin, a 6-story surf-side hotel, is Mark the security guard. On the way to our top-floor Venice Beach-facing room, Mark strikes up a conversation (without knowing LEFAIR Magazine is here to write). Mark has worked at Hotel Erwin for over 20 years. While we can only guess what has kept him here so long, we could postulate that it’s the friendly clientele (families, lovebirds, tech tycoons, loners on spiritual journeys) and relaxed atmosphere. Hotel Erwin LEFAIR Magazine Venice Beach California

As a general rule, when the staff at a hotel are devoted and happy, so too are the hotel’s guests. Naturally, the hotel has loyal guests from every continent who visit Los Angeles every year and stay at Erwin for a week at a time.  Over the years, children of families who stayed in the hotel in the 70s have later gotten married on the roof. Hotel Erwin has seen couples who visited the hotel restaurant on their first date and later celebrated their 50th anniversaries at the hotel.

High Rooftop LEFAIR Magazine Tracy Kahn Hotel Erwin Venice Beach

The hotel was originally opened in 1975 as the Marina Pacific Hotel and Suites. In order to drive business to Venice Beach, it became a Best Western franchise. It was the first of the call-centers for international travel and kept the lights on. Later it came to be rightfully renamed, and rebranded in 2009 as “Hotel Erwin,” after its owner Erwin Sokol.

Mr. Sokol doesn’t just love his hotel property- it’s part of who he is. At age 84, he still comes to work from his fourth floor office. Guests used to mistake Mr. Sokol as part of the maintenance or hospitality staff because he essentially did all- cut keys, checked in guests, parked cars, and everything in between. His son Mark who now co-owns and operates the hotel, once flipped burgers in the lobby restaurant. He raised his family in the hotel, and the hotel staff were equally his family. He treats everyone the same as he did on day 1. With gratitude and humbleness. Before work-chat he’ll always ask, “how is the family?” and he genuinely wants to know.

We’re not talking about the second hand smoke high you will inevitably experience from the Venice Beach air thanks to its many cannabis dispensaries. We’re talking about the rooftop bar and restaurant atop Hotel Erwin. High Rooftop Lounge is the only Venice Beach rooftop location and boasts breathtaking views that span all of LA between the Hollywood and Venice Signs and continue to Catalina and the Santa Monica Mountains where the sun dips into the Pacific Ocean.

Whether it’s a brunch or a late-night dinner or snack, you’ll find an eclectic and diverse crowd on this rooftop. LEFAIR Magazine Hotel Erwin Venice BeachNote that this is not your typical Los Angeles rooftop experience- it’s not snobbish or discriminatory, pretentious or affected. So if you’re looking for bouncers and gatekeepers who get off on playing God, early 2000s “mean girls,” or bros working on their “hot or not” rating system, look elsewhere. Of course, you’ll always have your groups that enjoy the company of their phone over their party, but this is still Los Angeles after all.

High Rooftop Lounge accepts reservations, but walk-ins are also welcome. To book a table, simply call the restaurant during operating hours 424-433-8900 or book using Resy. The property is planning an upcoming upgrade and re-style of the rooftop including changes to the flooring and fabrics, and offering a more curated music program, which we hope will include some playlists featuring independent Los Angeles artists and perhaps more live music! The restaurant and bar recently launched a seasonal cocktail program and offer weekly specials and brunch.

High Rooftop Lounge LEFAIR Magazine Hotel Erwin Venice Beach Tracy Kahn

As proud sun worshippers, we highly (ha) recommend visiting High Rooftop Lounge during sunset. While we recommend this rooftop year-round, if you’re looking for heart-melting hues of pinks, periwinkle, oranges, and reds, note that winter is actually prime sunset season. Sunsets become more vivid in the winter because of low humidity and cleaner air. This means fewer particles to obscure or wash out colors. Further, the Earth spins closer to the sun during the winter, and the angle of the sun at sunset allows the colors to last a bit longer.

At night, cuddle up in a colorful Mexican Falsa Blanket under a heat lamp and listen to the early twenty-somethings at the next table clink their drinks and say, “I can’t believe we finally made it to Los Angeles.”

The RealReal Hotel Erwin Fashion Show Madeline Rosene LEFAIR Magazine

Over the years, this famous rooftop has proven to be a popular and poppin’ party venue. Just some of its past events include:

  • Vans Black Rainbows Kick off Party
  • Red Bull  3×3 Afterparty
  • DIOR featuring ERL fall fashion launch
  • DirecTV’s SuperBowl DragBowl with the Housewives
  • Live Streaming DJs by AT&T

Practically every tech company, VC, start up, and NFT has had events from twenty to 250 people on the roof and Hotel Erwin has been featured as a ‘date night’ venue on nearly every reality show on TV. Think of any Los Angeles sports team and they’ve likely celebrated something at this hotspot.

During our stay, one of our favorite fashion companies, The RealReal (The Real Catwalk), hosted a fashion show in collaboration with Pacifica Beauty and ACLU on the street behind the hotel and threw an after party on roof. The event celebrated body positivity, diversity and inclusion, and outrageously fabulous fashion.

Hotel Erwin Venice Beach LEFAIR MagazineWe recommend requesting a room with a view of Venice Beach. Note to people watching hobbyists: Venice Beach offers sights of human behavior unlike anywhere in the world. However, like everywhere in Los Angeles, the wealth gap is on full display: rich white men drive their Teslas past encampments and teenagers waiting for the bus dressed in their bargain duds from Ross Dress for Less. Pedestrians clutch their Gucci bags a little tighter as they walk past the rail thin homeless who dance to the music only they can hear in their heads, unconcerned with and unaware of any designer bags or their contents.

Venice California Hotel Erwin LEFAIR Magazine

Picture this: you’re salty and sandy and back from the beach. Maybe you’re still a little wet, but you have the perfect natural beach waves from the wind and salt water and the halls of Hotel Erwin are now your personal runway. Instead of returning to the nightmare of a carpeted hotel room that you worry you’ll damage from your grubby (but still totally sexy) beach body, you return to beach-messy-friendly tiled floors, a steamy shower with luxurious BYRD products, and a cozy waffle robe to wrap yourself in. Step out on your private balcony and soak up some sun while you air dry.

But Venice scenes don’t solely cause capitalism rejection and existential dread. Pick up basketball games, skateboarding, wacky and weird fashions, surfing and sunsets provoke an inescapable appreciation for the fucked up paradise that is the greater Los Angeles area. It is the people in Venice, California who are often so uniquely and unabashedly themselves that make the area one of the most beautiful and captivating destinations.

Hotel Erwin continually demonstrates an exceptional ability and commitment to adapt, change with the times, and experiment. This is evidenced by their opening of Venice Way Pizza on Friday March 13th, 2020 (oh, the timing…) and quickly morphing into a take-away slice shop during the pandemic that served over 1,000 whole pies to local charities including all Venice Family Clinics, The Boys & Girls Club of Venice, Safe Place for Youth and other businesses where there was a need to feed. The property’s resourcefulness was further exemplified during the pandemic through opening a “general store” of sorts that served the Venice community. It has since closed since hotel business is back and booming.

During our stay, we delighted in trying a number of menu items including the avocado toast and French toast for brunch. The portions are healthy, so there is no need to over-indulge. The French Toast is decadent and almost more of bread pudding. This appeared to be a popular menu item based on the number of people ordering it. The compound butter and pure maple syrup are heavenly.

We will abstain from providing more foodie details since, moving forward, we expect huge changes to the hotel’s food and beverage approach and concept. We do hope the avocado hummus and veggie plate will remain on the menu, as it is a delicious light snack to enjoy on the rooftop. The property will launch a concept in the lobby bar called the OtheRside – an homage to being on the other side of the Venice sign on Windward Circle. The bar will feature a menu that’s half vegetarian and vegan focused and half eclectic, early hang-over/late night bites for the Venice palate. “Knock and drop” room service is coming back post-pandemic and a major menu overhaul is also underway.

The staff makes a point to make sure you not only experience the all that the hotel has to offer, but also the very special location in which it lives. Need towels for the beach? Bicycles? Just ask the front desk. Want to go surfing for the first time? The staff can recommend one of their surf instruction partners. We chose “BADASS SURF SCHOOL” and were thrilled to receive a private, in-depth beginner class from its owner, Jake McNulty III. Jake McNulty BADASS Surf School Tracy Kahn LEFAIR Magazine Hotel Erwin Venice Beach

Jake’s effective teaching methods ensure that you feel safe and leave with a better understanding of tides, currents, proper surf body positioning, and likely the experience of getting up and riding a wave at least once. We confidently recommend BADASS SURF SCHOOL to any beginner surfers as well as novices and those looking for curated programs such as their “Therapeutic Experience.” This $800 all-inclusive, 6-hour surf, yin yoga, and massage wellness journey is designed to provide an energy healing and restoring adventure.

After the surfing calories are burned, it’s time to carb it up! Venice Beach boardwalk and Westminster avenue is home to our favorite fish and chips counter-serve joint outside of the UK, “The Wee Chippy.” Founded in Venice in 2013 by Scottish native Joe Gorrie, the takeaway spot boasts the highest quality Atlantic cod which can be seasoned in unlimited ways with their line of specialty gourmet salts.

If you suffer from fried food phobia like most of LA, we recommend that you head elsewhere, such as Gran Blanco, located around the corner from Hotel Erwin on Windward and Pacific Avenue. Gran Blanco’s mediterranean menu includes garlic and lemon marinated olives, wild arugula, ceviche, and many light bite choices as well as heavier options like the double smashed patty burger and the crispy octopus.

Hotel Erwin Venice Beach California LEFAIR Magazine Tracy KahnWhatever you decide to dine on, rest-assured they have a creative cocktail or natural wine that pairs perfectly. At night, the screenwriter bartender explained, the restaurant transforms into more of a club scene with DJs and dancing. Gran Blanco’s sister restaurant, Great White, is slightly more casual and focused on local cuisine and American classic. It is also located on Pacific avenue and a mere one minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel’s staff and their capacity to continually reinvent and upgrade this special place make the property almost feel alive. You don’t need to go to the rooftop to get high on the good vibes and energy that Hotel Erwin emanates. We congratulate this boutique hotel haven on remaining fun, vibrant, relevant, and comfortable throughout its many years of business. We look forward to experiencing all of Hotel Erwin’s upcoming improvements and are proud to name Hotel Erwin our top Los Angeles hotel pick for 2023.

Mercer Hotel, Barcelona https://www.lefairmag.com/mercer-hotel-barcelona/ Sat, 17 Sep 2022 21:03:09 +0000 https://lefairmag.com/?p=10857 Opened in September 2012, the Mercer Hotel Barcelona is an innovative boutique hotel 5*GL Monument set in the heart of Barcelonas Gothic Quarter, nearby the Cathedral. It is a unique setting, where guests can meet exclusivity. The Mercer is set in the picturesque and quiet Lledó Street –the most wanted manor house street on Medieval Barcelona period, placed inside the ancient wall perimeter- and it occupies a collection of buildings with great architectural significance, built on top of a section of the walls of Barcino, the ancient Roman city. The hotel retains features from a variety of historical periods stretching from the 1st century AD up to the 19th century, all of which have been restored not only to display but also to encourage a genuine feel for the history of Barcelona.

The renovation project was entrusted some years ago to Rafael Moneo, the prestigious Spanish architect who was distinguished with Pritzker Award, the Nobel Prize for architecture. His work has enabled a valuable piece of architectural heritage to be rescued and then integrated with innovative contemporary architecture, thus gifting the city with a building that looks to the future from a standpoint of respect for its past. Mercer philosophy is based on the combination of the cultural heritage and the unique personality of our luxury hotels buildings, with the excellence of a service exclusively focused on overcoming the highest expectations of our guests.

Restored historical features can be found in practically all the hotels spaces, including the 28 exclusive bedrooms: The wooden ceilings dating from the 18th century and the atrium, presided over by two pointed archways from the 14th century that are unique in Barcelona, where we find the Mercer Suite. The hotel interior design sought to set off the buildings historical features with the use of refined furniture in a contemporary design and modern materials, with international design brands such as Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner or Franco Albini, among others. All of this is complemented by the expressionist art of the Catalan painter Agustí Puig.

Located inside the hotel, the Mercer Restaurant is one of the hotel and city hidden treasures. A truly unique space, overlooking the orange trees courtyard and surrounded by the history of old Barcino, where architecture and design go hand to hand with haute cuisine. Catalan chef Xavier Lahuerta proposes his contemporary and refined cuisine with a Mediterranean soul and selected ingredients (a la carte and tasting menu). The Mercer Restaurant offers different rooms -such as the one located in one of the watchtowers of the ancient Barcelonas Roman wall- that can be partially reserved or exclusively privatized, to host small professional o social celebrations. Every morning, the Mercer team takes care of even the smallest detail of the breakfast service, served by the Mercer Restaurant or the Patio (in spring and summer).

The hotel also offers a more informal gastronomic proposal: The Gastrobar Le Bouchon. This authentic and flirty bistro offers classic tapas, local specialties and a selection of wines in a casual ambience. Between stone walls with centuries of history is the Mercer Cocktail Bar, an elegant and intimate space where you can enjoy a cocktail made under the classical standards of great mixology. Finally, on the hotel rooftop guests will find the exclusive and quiet Mercer terrace, with pool, solarium, a Mediterranean garden, pool bar service and nice views to the Gothic Quarter rooftops. www.mercerbarcelona.com

Mr. C is the Place To Be https://www.lefairmag.com/mr-c-place/ Sun, 08 May 2022 21:16:36 +0000 https://lefairmag.com/?p=10820 Writer: Madeline Rosene

Mr. C Beverly Hotels was the first of three hotel properties in the Mr. C Hotel collection. Born in June 2011, Mr. C Beverly Hills set a precedent for luxury, service, and style that its sister properties in Sea Port, New York and Coconut Grove Miami, Florida follow to a T.

This sexy and successful hotel brand was founded by two members of the internationally recognized Cipriani family, Maggio and Ignazio Cipriani. Celebrated for their contributions to the luxury hospitality space, the Ciprianis own restaurants, lounges, and hotels throughout Europe and the United States, including Casa Cipriani in New York City.

The white exterior of Mr. C Beverly is illuminated at night with glowing blue lighting that plays with the shadows of the surrounding palm trees.

Inside, the walls that enclose the lobby and bar are solid rosewood- rich and warm. Eames lounge chairs, marble floors, and deep green upholstered sofas emanate a soft, sophisticated masculinity. The backlit bar is lined with leather chairs. It is the old-world decor, wine and cocktail selection, and the company of the attentive bar staff that make it possible to spend several hours in this atmosphere without realizing.

Guest rooms are either appointed with caramel or white furnishings. Their private terraces provide the potential for a romantic evening and an expansive view of the hills (hello, Instagram!). Expect to sleep soundly. The bed is firm and the pillows are soft. Suites sell fast at Mr. C Beverly Hills, so if you were planning to book one and it is unavailable, ask for a Premium Beverly Hills View. The Premium rooms are located on the top floors (6-11) and offer the best views of Beverly Hills.

Mr. C Beverly Hills is part of the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts Collection, which means, those experienced travelers who hold an Amex Platinum Card can take advantage of such perks as the $100 credit to use at the restaurant, bar, or other hotel amenity, a $60 breakfast credit for two, and more.

If you are a room service addict, do not miss out at Mr. C Beverly Hills. Take your tray out on the terrace or snuggle up in bed. The banana pancakes are heavenly, fluffy, and topped with powdered sugar. The avocado toast is light on the toast and heavy on the avocado, topped with radishes and goat cheese.

For another in-hotel culinary experience, go downstairs and visit the Mr. C Restaurant. Open seven days a week from morning to night, travelers and Angelenos enjoy its authentic Italian cuisine. The restaurant features, among others, a selection of grilled specialties, crudo alla Veneziana, savory pizzas and risotto as well as classic Cipriani dishes like the signature Carpaccio and baked tagliolini.
Allow me to personally suggest starting with the Steak Tartare alla Cipriani and the baby artichoke and avocado salad with shaved parmesan. As someone who has ordered her fair share of steak tartare throughout Paris, I can safely say the steak tartare at Mr. C Restaurant is unquestionably superior. As far as pasta goes, if you’re with a group, order a few and share. Recommendations: the tagliardi with black truffle, risotto with porcini mushrooms, and spaghetti al pesto.

The hotel boasts a 4,500 square-foot luxury pool area that features teak decking with poolside bar and dining options and pool attendant. Relax the day away on one of the day beds or rent a cabana.

With such attention to quality and detail, it is no wonder that four generations ago, in 1931, the Cipriani family started with one restaurant in Venice, Italy, Harrys Bar, and eventually became a world renowned hospitality brand recognized for its distinguished venues and service all over the world. The simple luxury and discreet, personalized attentiveness that Mr. C Beverly Hills provides surely builds loyalty among its guests.

Sundream Tulum https://www.lefairmag.com/sundream-tulum/ Tue, 19 Apr 2022 23:04:04 +0000 https://lefairmag.com/?p=10772 Writer: Madeline Rosene
Photographers: Tracy Kahn and Michael Drummond

A mini paradise on the water, Sundream Festival in Tulum, Mexico, 2022 boasted major headliners in the electronic dance music scene. Rufus Du Sol, who subsequently won a grammy for best electronic recording just a few weeks later, spearheaded the event in tandem with hotel property, Papaya Playa Project (@papayaplayaproject). There were more than 20 other performances by established and up and coming artists (including Bob Moses, Cassian, Magdalena, Adam Port, Monolink, and more) over the course of this intimate festival that took place over two weekends in March. With a lineup like that, it is no wonder it is hard to obtain a ticket to what hass been described as a bucket list festival.

LEFAIR Magazine interviewed several festival goers (Sundreamers) to learn about what they experienced and how Sundream Festival sets itself apart from other music festivals.

Music on a beautiful beach location

A gentle breeze, waves crashing on the beach: even for experienced festival goers who have traveled all over the world to hear music, this setting is particularly magical. Hosted by Papaya Playa Project, most attendees expressed that they had never been to a venue like this before: on the beach, with a raised area where one can watch the musicians perform, plenty of places to eat and drink, and another area reserved for vendors and artists. The venue is separated from the ocean by just a single rope, providing an unbeatable view of the water and (if you stand close enough) the chance for waves to hit your feet during the show.

Making friends

As a brand new, fairly small festival, one goer noted some initial shyness among the crowd. Maybe it was the feeling that we were all experiencing something unique together or maybe it was the fact that there are so many farmacias that deliver (almost anything) in close proximity, but that shyness dissipated and soon everyone was interested in getting to know each other and having a good time, and by the end we almost felt like a family. With everyones positive vibes and vibrant energies, it would be a shock to learn that anyone left Sundream without making at least one new friend.

We met a fellow named Hamilton who has been traveling the world this past year and convinced multiple people along the way to come to Sundream with him. Go figure! I also met a large group of Canadians who live in Toronto (my current location) that I am now friends with, said Sundreamer, doctor and DJ, Sean Cruise.

The music

It is no secret that many Sundreamers were initially attracted to this festival based on the promise of seeing EDM darlings, Rufus Du Sol. Festival attendee, Dustin Krause, is a keynote speaker and performance coach who said, Heading to the festival, I was most excited about Rufus du Sols club sets. Leading up to the festival, I was working out at Rodeo Athletic in West Hollywood and one of the owners, Ben, also trains the band and goes on tour with them. He had been hyping up their club sets and it was a totally different experience!

The caliber of the supporting acts was also something to write home about. Believe it or not I have never had the chance to see Rufus, said Sean Cruise. After the lineup was released with so many other amazing artists, I felt like this was a festival I did not want to miss.

Sundream Festival is a place of discovery. It offers the chance to meet new people and hear music you may have never heard. Before the festival, Dustin Krause had one Cassian song in his liked songs on Spotify. Cassian is a live electronic Los Angeles based musician. He is an accomplished producer, DJ, and mixing engineer, and is sometimes referred to as one of the most versatile musicians from Sydney, Australias electronic scene. Cassian, Dustin Krause said, turned out to be one of the highlights of the festival experience for him. Bob Moses was probably one of the sets I was most excited for, Krause said. I really fell in love with their entire catalogue on a much deeper level, and I immediately bought a ticket to go see them in Seattle in May!

Sean Cruise said he had not heard very much of Adam Ports music before Sundream, but he was absolutely blown away by him, Carlita (during week two), and Magdalena, who he declares all played amazing sets. Sean was not the only attendee who was introduced to and blown away by Adam Ports music. Sundreamers and Tulum frequenters, Celia Flores and her husband, Eric Barnes are co-founders of Dont Trip Campout music festival. When asked if they were introduced to any new music while at Sundream, Celia replied, Adam Port, where did he come from and how come I am just now hearing about him? He blew me away, from song selection to smooth transitions. Start to finish he made a fan out of us! He was the perfect surprise, and his B2B set with Rufus was the sweetest ending to such a magical journey.

The unexpected collaboration of Jon and James of Rufus du Sol and Adam Port at the end of the festival was a huge crowd pleaser. Sean Cruise said watching them mix together into the sunrise on the last night was an incredible way to end things!

In many ways attending a music festival like Sundream can be a spiritual experience. It is a time to let go, be present, get in touch with yourself, bond with old friends and new friends, try new things (again, not just from the farmacia), and heal through the power of music. Celia Flores said, We strongly believe music is an energetic force. Experiencing the magic and message through music is an ancient form of healing that this world needs more of today.

Letting oneself become completely immersed in the here and now is a freeing feeling, and music facilitates this so beautifully. At one point during one of the Rufus sets, I looked around and did not see one cell phone, Dustin Krause said. I thought that was so beautiful that everyone at that moment was so engulfed by the music. I did my best to capture a few photos and videos for keepsakes, but tried to stay as present as possible.

MIND AND BODY

Another aspect of Sundream that sets it apart is its focus on wellness and making sure attendees are feeling fresh, energized and enlightened. The MIND AND BODY activities at Sundream could be described as group recreational self-care with sound baths, yoga, and something called an authenticity journey, similar to a group meditation or reiki session, but differentiated in the way that the group lies down together and is cleansed by smoke or incense, while the leader talks them through a journey that helps facilitate out of body experiences and getting in touch with ones inner child. Dustin Krause said, I took some of the best yoga classes of my life with the most incredible views. On Sunday of weekend one, I stayed for yoga, the authenticity journey, and the sound bath meditation. I had never done anything like that before in my life! I had a bit of an out of body experience as we traveled through some of the different dimensions.

Outside the festival

Tulum has quickly become one of the most popular vacation destinations in Mexico over the last few years much thanks to the travel influencer community. With so many places to eat, drink, and sleep, we wanted to know about some of the areas hot spots. Celia Flores describes Tulum as her and her husbands second home. Their stay in Tulum extended after the festival and they rented the same little bungalow on the beach that they rent every time they visit. It is kind of our place at this point, she said. There is no shortage of rental properties available in the Tulum area as long as you book in advance. There are over 300 Airbnb listings in Tulum all within a very affordable $30 to $115 per night range. VRBO offers some of the more luxurious options with some properties ranging from $200 to $600 per night.

For convenience and proximitys sake (and because it is an outstanding hotel), Celia and Eric chose to stay at the eco-friendly boutique hotel La Posada del Sol during the festival. During the first week, Dustin Krause stayed at Habitas, the adjacent property to Papaya Playa Project. This afforded him the ease and tranquility of walking through a forest walkway to get to and from the festival. The lanterns were so breathtaking and they had some forest sounds playing; I truly felt like I was caught in a dream, Dustin said. What an absolutely stunning place to stay…For the remaining 7 days, I was about a mile up the road at Mi Amor. The service there was outstanding!

As far as dining goes, Kitchen Table, Celia said, is our favorite dinner place, hands down! We also love Mateo’s Mexican Grill for a quick bite. We must have eaten there at least three times this trip. But basically anywhere you go in Tulum you will be greeted with fresh organic food and well-curated music. The mayan people have a way of always making you feel welcome.

Of course, lunch on the beach is always a delight, and for that we recommend the open terrace at Restaurant Molcajete attached to hotel Piedra Escondida. After a night of dancing, a few carbs can not hurt, right? Try the Fettuccine with Lobster and their traditional Tuna Nachos.

Sad to go but looking forward to next year

On the final night of the festival, Celia Flores and Eric Barnes stayed up until dawn watching the colors of the clouds change as we effortlessly danced with the music until sunrise, it was surreal, said Celia.

No one wanted to wake up from their Sundream. Everyone we spoke to agreed that they would absolutely like to attend the festival next year. Bring back Adam Port! Celia said. If we could choose, we would like to see Odesza, Ben Bohmer, Satori, Nicola Cruz, and andhim, in this type of setting as well.

Sean Cruise was so inspired by the music and vibes from Sundream that he decided to put together his first mix of his DJing career. Now LEFAIR readers can have a little Sundream of their own, since all of the songs on the mix were heard during the second weekend of the festival.

What is your name?

Dustin Kraus, but most people call me Coach!

Where do you live?

I live in Downtown Los Angeles

Why did you decide to go to Sundream?

I discovered Rufus shortly after moving to LA just months before the pandemic. They quickly grew on me and when live music opened back up I was able to catch them at Austin City Limits in 2021. A couple of months later, I snagged a seat in the front row at Banc of California here in LA. LIFE CHANGING! With regard to Sundream, I actually had never been out of the country and was turning 30 this year and made it a mission to take at least one trip abroad. When the guys announced the festival, even though I was unable to snag a ticket originally, I quickly began manifesting an ultimate 30th birthday solo trip down to Tulum. Within a few weeks, I had secured a ticket and was then able to grab the additional weekend on the adjacent property: Habitas. I thought about selling one weekend for a couple of weeks, but quickly decided this needed to be a full 10 day experience. I am so glad I did both weekends!

What was the most unique thing about Sundream that sets it apart from other music festivals?

I thought the energy was completely different because it was so intimate and I felt like everyone who was there was like-minded. You knew going in you were going to be surrounded by some of the bands biggest fans who embody everything their music stands for and feels like.

Did you make any new friends? How did you meet them?

This was one of the best parts! So I went down solo not knowing anyone. Leading up to the festival, a solo travelers group broke out of one of the Sundream Facebook groups that turned into a WhatsApp chat. I shared a shuttle from the CUN airport to Tulum with 2 of them! Then at the shows, I discover that two friends I had made in the front row at Banc of California here in LA were down, for both weekends as well, and somehow they knew many of the folks from the solo travelers group! It seemed like a crazy dejavu experience of sorts.

Do you feel that Sundream was as much about the people connecting as it was about the music?

Absolutely. Everyone is still chatting: many are meeting up at other festivals, or heading to see them at the Gorge later this year (me!)

What did you wear at the event? Do you feel that the fashion worn at the event was influenced by any of the artists who were performing?

I did find myself wearing long shirts that were much more free-flowing than what I would usually wear!

Did you dine, drink and or dance anywhere in Tulum that you would recommend?

One the highlights of the trip for me was Granito Beach right next to the Amor. The most incredible vibe, drinks and live music/tap dancing. I had stopped in for a drink on the way to the festival the 2nd weekend and ended up just staying there all night because it was so amazing!

Yucatan https://www.lefairmag.com/yucatan/ Mon, 21 Feb 2022 22:49:33 +0000 https://lefairmag.com/?p=10697 Yucatán is one of 32 states that comprise the Federal Entities of Mexico. It is currently the safest state in Mexico and its capital city, Mérida, was awarded City of Peace in 2011.

The locals have a genuine hospitality, warm, and generous manner. This kind of openness and congeniality is evidenced by the large number of fondas, pop-up restaurants or inns in peoples homes that exist throughout the state. If you are looking to replace your usual five-star glitz for a little grit, be sure to visit a fonda, where you might find the best home-cooked cheese empanadas you have ever tasted.

For a true and authentic experience while visiting Yucatán be prepared for a spiritual, somewhat rugged adventure.

Getting Around

For those who have never visited Mexico, it is important to note that some traffic laws are different from the United States. For instance, licensed and registered ATVs, like four wheelers, are considered street legal in Mexico for driving on conventional roads. There are many companies that will rent ATVs for daily use and can even lead you on a tour through Mayan villages. You can also choose to travel by bicycle or pedicab. Pedicabs are bicycle cabs and are both a fun and practical means of transportation. These rickshaw-like bicycles are often motorized and usually have some kind of canopy for shade. This is a welcomed feature since, even in winter, the weather is generally hot and humid, with temperatures often hitting the low to mid 80s.

Sites to See

Acanceh, a town and ancient Maya archaeological site 21 kilometers from Mérida. The town was founded sometime between 300 and 500 AD and is known for its churches which are constructed from former Mayan temples and pyramids. The population is still mostly Maya who speak the Yucatec Maya language but usually understand basic Spanish. Fun fact: Yucatecan teenager, Santos Tuz, native to the town of Oxkutzcab, teaches Mayan on his TikTok account with over 300,000 followers. You can follow him at @Tuzsantos322.

The central square of Acanceh is home to a vibrant yellow Colonial church, Arquidiócesis de Yucatán A.R. La Natividad and a pre-Columbian pyramid.

Izamal: 44 miles east of Mérida is a ceremonial Pueblo Mágico or magical town called Izamal. In the Yucatec Maya Language, Izamal means: dew of heaven. In this former capital city, almost every building in the area is painted yellow. With the blue sky as a backdrop, the architecture of this small colonial town makes for a very photogenic visiting experience. The optimistic primary color drenches the area in positivity and sunshine. Although there are many theories, why it is painted yellow remains a mystery. It is home to the historic Convento San Antonio de Padua, built in 1561 on top of the ancient Mayan worship center. The church dominates the center of Izamal and is an important place for worship among Catholics. It has the second largest enclosed atrium in the world (the Vatican has the largest). Many pilgrimage to this site as it is believed that the statues of saints inside the convent perform miracles. Izamal is also known as a town with three cultures because it holds the history of the ancient Maya people, Spanish colonials, and todays modern population.

Drive three hours east to the Riviera Maya and beach destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Puerto Progreso: Progreso is a port city on Mexicos Yucatán Peninsula. It is a common stop for cruise ships, which dock at its landmark long pier. An oceanfront promenade, the Malecón, is lined with beaches and thatch-roofed restaurants and bars. The Venice Beach-like boardwalk is bustling with nightlife. Keep an eye out for the Faro de Puerto Progreso, an active lighthouse built in 1893.

Cenotes: Cenotes, or sinkholes are natural deep-water wells. These aquatic systems are abundant throughout the Yucatán Peninsula. Cenotes were the only source of water in the jungle for the Mayan civilization and are considered sacred by the Mayan people. Cenotes are formed when rainwater absorbs a gas (carbon dioxide) from the air and forms a weak acid. As this trickles down through small cracks in the limestone, the weak acid dissolves a mineral in the limestone called calcite. Over time the limestone is dissolved and a cenote is formed. Ik Kil is a cenote outside Pisté in the Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán, Mexico. It is located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula and is part of the Ik Kil Archeological Park near Chichen Itza. It is open to the public for swimming with an entrance fee of $80 pesos.

Architecture

The city of Mérida is an architectural nerds dream. The Yucatan economic boom of the 1800s caused an increase in stunning French-style mansions in the capital city. The economic expansion was due to the production of Henequen, a type of agave plant that grows widely throughout the Yucatan region. Henequen was discovered and cultivated by the indigenous Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula. The leaves of the henequen plant are used to make a fiber which is used to make rope or twine. When the Spanish arrived they renamed the plant agave sisal, mechanized the production process and began exporting agave sisal to other countries.

This burgeoning economic market paved the way for the gentrification of the avenue of Montenegro in Merida, where those who benefitted from the green gold rush built large, somewhat ostentatious, nouveau-riche mansions modeled after the architecture on the Champs-Elysées. Some of these historic homes are possible to tour, including Montejo 495 Casa Museo, one of two almost identical twin mansions. Built in 1911, the public is now invited to see inside Casas Cámara, also known as the Casas Gemelas or Twin Houses. Montejo 495 Casa Museo is the house on the left if you are viewing them from the Paseo. It is a time capsule that brings visitors back to Yucatáns golden age. The homes marble-clad rooms, ornate French-style parlors, opulent artwork, and fine furnishings provide every design dork with a buffet of eye candy. Each room has a docent, speaking in both Spanish and English, to give the rooms context.

Culinary

One word: Chaya. Often called the Maya Miracle Plant, Chaya is a leafy green spinach-like vegetable. Esteemed as a staple food through the Pacific Rim and throughout Yucatan, it grows naturally in thickets and the open forest. You can find Chaya on almost every menu in Yucatan- mixed in creamy soups, salsas, salads, and, our favorite way: in a cocktail. It is prized for its nutritional value, boasting a richer iron content than spinach. It is also a powerful source of potassium and calcium. According to the National Institute of Nutrition in Mexico City, chaya can improve blood circulation and vision, aid digestion, help lower cholesterol, help reduce weight, as well as provide many other health benefits.

You might be surprised to find that pavo (turkey) is also on the menu at most restaurants. Of course it makes sense since Turkeys are native to the eastern states of Mexico. In the United States, we generally think of carné asada, carnitas, al pastor, and pollo as the staple Mexican cuisine meat styles. In Yucatan, however, the cuisine is quite different from other regions of Mexico due to the significant influence of Maya culture. The food is most commonly built around these key ingredients- habanero peppers, corn, beans, citrus, achiote, and smoke.

Cochinita pibil or Yucatán-style barbecued pork is a popular dish. Pibil comes from the Mayan word píib, (in modern Mexican Spanish, pib), which is a Maya oven or a hole in the ground with a base of embers and hot stones. It is in this píib that the meat cooks for hours, slowly soaking up the aroma of the banana leaves its cooked in imparting a smokiness and earthiness that is likely impossible to recreate with more modern or conventional styles of cooking.

But if you are not ready to get down (literally underground) with the Maya-style home-cooked cuisine, below are four recommended restaurants in the state of Yucatan.

Where to Eat

Micaela Mar & Leña. Calle 47 458, Centro, 97000 Mérida, Yuc., MX: We highly suggest visiting Micaela Mar & Lena for elevated local fare, Mezcal mixed drinks. Yelpers particularly rave about the attentive and engaging service and grilled pulpo (octopus) dish. While the menu is largely seafood based, it also contains many vegetarian options including a vegan ceviché. Seafood lovers can hit the raw bar and order fresh tuna, oysters, and shrimp. The wine list is extensive, but wine is only served by the bottle. Our tips? Follow your servers lead, as they are known to make excellent recommendations. Make sure to call in advance and make a reservation if you are planning to dine on a weekend evening. Many reviewers contend that if Micaela Mar & Leña was in the United States, they would be booked solid two weeks in advance.

KUUK. Avenida Romulo Rozo #488 por calle 27 y 27A Col. Itzimná, MX: Kuuk, or sprout in Mayan, opened its doors in 2012 and is located in a renovated mansion. The restaurant is known for its artistically plated gourmet meals. Choose between an a la carte menu or a 10 course prix fixe tasting menu with an optional wine pairing. Whatever michelin-level culinary journey you embark upon, this imaginative fine dining experience will not disappoint. Each dish is more creative than the next and most diners agree that the appetizers are in fact something to write home about: particularly the black ceviche and the coriander beef tacos. Do not miss out on the honeycomb dessert.

Ixiim. San Antonio Chablé, 97816 Chocholá, Yuc., MX: Located at hotel Chablé Yucatan Resort & Spa, Ixiim has a limited, but highly refined and curated menu created by chef Jorge Vallejo, one of the most renowned and respected chefs in Mexico. The menu is simple but innovative, a conscientious blend of modern and Mayan cuisine. A few menu favorites are the lobster tartare and the Asadero cheese soup with pork and corn husk ashes. Ixiim boasts a collection of 3,700 bottles of tequila, one of the largest tequila selections in the world, so make sure you take advantage of the tequila tasting!

Where to Stay

Chablé Yucatan

Tablaje #642, Chocholá, Yucatán México 97816: Celebrated for its breathtaking grounds and phenomenal service, Chablé Yucatan is a small, exclusive resort, not far from the capital city, Mérida. You will be welcomed with a Mayan ceremony and you will stay inside your own modern casita. Start your days with morning meditation by the propertys own private cenote at the spa. Enjoy healthy and balanced menu options at the onsite restaurant, Kiol, for daily breakfast and lunch.

The following three hotels are Marriott properties. Before you think of the stark white, minimal, corporate, sometimes overly starched sheets that is typical of some Marriott hotels, it is important to note that, much to our delight, Marriott has been expanding to include more boutique-like hotels as well as opulent luxury properties (like its joint venture with BVLGARI) or, in the case of Hacienda Temozon, San Jose, and Santa Rosa more eclectic and geographically authentic properties.

Hacienda Temozon

Km 182 Carretera Merida-Uxmal, 97825 Temozón Sur, Yuc., Mexico: Hacienda Temozon has the most unusual and luxurious onsite spa. Hol-Be Spa is a Mayan Spa that uses only natural products. It is known for its signature Sobada Maya treatment. This unique healing massage is imparted at the spa by Mayan hands that have practiced this for over 150 years. It is an extraordinary experience and it should only be practiced by a regional therapist with extensive experience. Enjoy the massage in the hotels cenote surrounded by a lush sub-tropical jungle, the Hol-Be Spa offers an intimate and exclusive atmosphere. Regarding the guest rooms, do not expect modern, sleek, or glamorous design. Understand that the decor is regionally authentic. We suggest splurging on a suite so you can enjoy your in-room hammock and a private plunge pool on an ample terrace.

Hacienda San Jose

Km 30 Carretera Tixkokob-Tekanto, 97470 Tixkokob, Yuc., MX: Hacienda San Jose, shares a lot of the same qualities of Hacienda Temozon. Walkways of flower arches welcome you to Hacienda San Jose. Its colorful blue exterior is charming, and at night the flickering of candles throughout the grounds is romantic. Hacienda San Jose is a historical plantation house located in the northern Yucatan peninsula. If you are seeking adventure, the property is conveniently close to the Chichen Itza archaeological site. Guests can enjoy the outdoor pool, spa treatments, bicycles, private tours guided by archaeologists, historians and field experts, cooking classes with celebrated chefs, swimming and dining. Speaking of dining, the hotel has an exquisite onsite restaurant where you can taste both local and international cuisine prepared by San Jose Restaurants Chef Reyes Santos in a picturesque, transformative setting. Pro tip: Request the private table near the candlelit banyan trees for a romantic and truly social media-worthy dining opportunity.

Hacienda Santa Rosa

Carretera Mérida Campeche DesviacióN Maxcanú, 97800 Santa Rosa, Yuc., MX: Hacienda Santa Rosa is an enchanting property that boasts lush gardens and intimate campfires. The authentic rooms and suites feature hand-carved wood furnishings and vintage Mexican decor. Each room is decorated with fresh flowers by local women dressed in their handmade, white, traditional, mayan dress, the Huipil. Renew your body, mind and soul with indigenous products and natural body treatments at the spa, then soak up the sun by the private pool. When hunger strikes, revel in the convenience of room service and savor fresh ingredients from the hotels own garden.
